Gender Conversation Questions
Warm-up Task:
Think about the following words, and say if they feel more feminine, masculine, or neutral: punch, flower, book, love, kindness, language.
Discussion Questions:
- What is different between men and women?
- While some people identify as a man or a woman, some people identify as neither or as both or somewhere in-between. Do you feel 100% one gender?
- If you are a girl, have you ever felt like a tomboy? Did you want to do activities that mainly boys were doing?
- Some people want to be referred to with specific pronouns. For example, they might prefer they/them over he/him. Do you have a preference like this?
- Did you go to a single-sex school or a mixed gender school? Which is better for academic and social development?
- In the home you grew up in, were the gender roles very traditional? Who did the cooking? Who fixed things?
- Are men better at some things than women? Are women better than men at some things?
- Do you prefer working with men or women? Do you prefer to have a female or a male boss? Give your reasons.
- Some bars or nightclubs offer free entry to women on ladies' nights. How do you feel about this?
- Should a man hold a door for a woman because she is a woman? Why might this practice annoy some people?
- What is your impression of feminism?
- Do you know any male chauvinists? What kind of ideas do they express?
- What are some common learning differences between girls and boys? Why do they seem to have different strengths?
- Has your country ever had a female leader? Does the gender of a leader make a difference?
- Do women face more barriers to succeeding in business than men?
- Should women be able to fight on the front line in the military? Can you think of any reasons against this?
- Some people grow up feeling they are the wrong gender and take steps to live as the gender they feel they are inside. Have you met a transgender person? What kinds of challenges do they face?
