Culture Conversation Questions

Warm-up Question:
What do people from around the world know about your country’s culture? Which things are the most famous?

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you mainly think about when you hear the word culture? (e.g. food, clothing, traditions, attitudes, social customs, etc.)
  2. What is something that you like about your country’s culture?
  3. What is something that you dislike about your country’s culture?
  4. How does your country’s culture seem different from another country’s (choose another country that you know something about and provide an example).
  5. Do you think cultures around the world are becoming more similar? Is this because of globalization? And if so, is this good or bad?
  6. Before going to an unfamiliar country, would you try to learn about its culture? How would you do that?
  7. What is culture shock? Have you ever experienced it?
  8. To learn a language, should a student also learn about that language’s related culture?

  1. Are you more interested in high culture (plays, classical music, literature, and art) or popular culture (pop music, television shows, movies, and video games)?
  2. Some people claim that culture is in decline. Is the culture of your country getting worse in some way? Or do you disagree with those claims?
  3. Communities, online and offline, can have their own subcultures. Are you familiar with any examples?
  4. Have you heard anything about the culture at well-known companies? Give examples if you can.
  5. When thinking about getting a job, do you think about cultural fit? Will you try to fit their culture? Or are you looking for a company culture that matches your character?
  6. Why is cultural awareness important when working internationally?
